Don't be fooled, the counter counts everytime a search engine "crawls" over the site as an individual visitor.   Googlebot and Yahoo! Slurp amongst others  will routinely visit JREB 20+ times a day.

As a matter of fact, at the time I posted this, Yahoo! Slurp had no less than 26 spiders on the site, and Googlebot had 2.

Reality is we're probably averaging about 35-40  actual members  a day.   I'm not saying this to be negative, simply to try and inspire more folks to visit and get active.

It seems there has been a steady climb just in the last few days. I first noticed there were (I think) 27 guests night before last. Then I noted 30 something and last night 73 Guests.

Fantastic.

Morning Sean,

Would that also apply to the different catagories within Jreb? I looked at "Who's Viewing What" and there were a varied listing of what was being viewed at that time. And two pages at that. Would the Google and Yahoo sites be able to show particularly what was being viewed?

No, most webcrawlers are based on a keyword or "Boolean Search" technique.  Those crawlers will go through every byte of JREB over the course of 24 hours and they "remember" key words associated with certain IP's and domains.  When someone out in internet-land searches for something that might trigger their memory they will display everything they've encountered during their daily searches.

It's pretty interesting actually, the artificial intelligence in search engines has gotten so good over the past few years.

Besides what Sean said, we have also created a 'site map' and submitted it to some of the larger search engines.  This basically lets them know where are here, and give them the map to look at certain parts of the site for certain things. This encompasses the NS board, the Gallery, and other public parts of Jreb. For our gallery users, the search engines record the Key words you enter into each image field as you upload or edit. That way, when someone searches for, lets say, NS 4610, your photos will be included in the other 10,000 that will also be found.

While all this traffic does use a certain portion of our bandwith and server load, it really does not effect the speed of Jreb at all.  We have had several members that have come to us after learning about the site though a search engine, and that right there makes it worthwhile. Almost ANY forum site, of any nature, will see more visitors than users, its just the way it works. Most parts of the NS board are open for all to see, but there are a couple of places (like heads up) that are reserved for our members only. We have a most excellent core group, and hope to attract even more to join us...the search engines are just one way of doing that.

Since there seems to be some interest in all this behind the scenes stuff, lets look at some numbers. Our Host allows JREB to use a maximum of 100 GB of bandwith per month. So far this month, we have used 6% of that. We are given 5000mb of server space to use, and currently we are only using about 4% of that, not bad considering how many photos there are sitting in the Two Galleries, and how much space the forum takes up. This number can fluctuate from time to time as we clean and remove old stuff, but as you can see, we have a LOT of room to grow right now, space is not a concern.

So far for the month of June 2006, there have been 9090 visitors, including members and guest. Those users have looked a 376,049  pages (gallery and forum) and have used 4.08 GB  (470.21 KB/visit) of bandwith.

The Search engine spiders, bots ect have made 27103 visits so far this month, and have produce over 900 direct hits to JREB from direct searches all over the world.

Thats impressive,

With the way the site is set up and the graphics I would not have thought thee was that much space. I am assuming at the end of the post you referred to June 2006 stats. that you infact meant 2007?

I must say that of the groups and sites I have seen this is one of the most well thought out and designed sites to come along. Its easy to navigate and has alot to offer. Well executed.

Thanks for the info and stats.
