I spent part of yesterday with the former Erie RR Buffalo Division. The morning started at CP Linden.  A rather short westbound 309 crossed Molasses Hill Road shortly before 9 AM.

NS/CP 38T arrived late in the morning.

Got questions? I can help you with the Erie Lackawanna (including predecessors), Lehigh Valley, Delaware & Hudson and the shortlines of upstate NY.

Eastbound 38T didn't seem to be moving very fast... so the chase was on. I got past the train and set up for a few shots at Dale Road, which is near MP 380.

I was heading back on Molasses Hill Road when I spied an other eastbound train at the crossing in the distance. This one was 13T- which was longer and IMO moving faster than 38T. I turned around for a chase... and this one was a bear! Good shots were hard to get because the train was beating me to each crossing or scenic overlook. I finally decided to get far ahead of the train and drove all the way down to Portage, which has a 10 mph speed restriction on the bridge. Upon arrival, I discovered a train was accelerating after coming across the famous viaduct. "Holy crap!" I thought. "How did 13T get head of me?" Well, it wasn't 13T.  This train was the slower 38T, which I caught one more time... a few miles down the road, next to State Route 70.

I tried to get back to Portage to catch 13T coming across the viaduct, but the engines had already cleared it by the time I got there. I turned around and headed back to State Route 70 again. 13T was nipping at the heels of 38T yesterday- the two trains were maybe 25 minutes apart here.

All photos in this post were taken by me on Sunday 2/24/2013 in Dalton, NY. I was getting hungry and thirsty by this point... so it was time to get a snack and a Mountain Dew (chase fuel!), then head home. The flakes were flying, but it wasn't a bad drive at all.
