Well I finally came across with some cash.  Mr. Bell and I went shopping Sunday for a camera.  I ended buying a Canon EOS Rebel XTi.  I am enjoying the eye opening experience of ownig a DSLR.  I never realized that DSLR's where so much better than P&S cameras.

Alright on to the subject at hand.  I have taken my camera to work with me everyday since I got it.  So I thought I would share some of my first train pics.

A fool and his money soon part, at least when it comes to bells and whistles like this. IS will suck your wallet and batteries dry, but for what we shoot 99% of the time, it would be useless.

I'm affraid I beg to differ with you on this Emmett. I've been shooting with Canon Image Stabilized lenses now for 5 year and found the IS feature to be more than useful more times than I can remember. Yes, these lenses do cost more up front. But when it comes to battery life there is not a problem. On my current 30D, with the battery grip holding 2 batteries, I can shoot over 1000 shots with IS engaged 100% of the time and battery life was never an issue when shooting with the previous D30 or 10D. Now IS is not going to help you if you are shooting  a wedgie, moving 50mph at 1/125 sec, you still have to have a decen shutter speed to stop the action. It does greatly make up for camera shake though. For instance, I can shoot a 400mm (640mm equivalent on 30D body) telephoto with my 100-400L IS, handlheld, at 1/125 and walk away with a nice sharp photo.  I've also tried similar shots with the IS turned off with poor results. Just looking through the viewfinder alone you will notice a great difference, particularly at these longer focal lengths. The 2-3 stop advantge with the IS engaged is definitely noticeable. I've got the 24-105L F4 IS, 70-200 F2.8 IS and 100-400L F4.5-5.6 IS lenses and while expenseive would not trade any of them. When it gets dark and you have stationary subjects the IS can work wonders as well. When I got my 30D this past April and I went out after dark one night to find a parked train to do some night shots to see how the high ISO performance was. After all of those test shots were done (camera mounted on a tripod) I decided to try high ISO's with IS lenses handheld. Shooting at ISO 3200, 24mm at F4 and 1/8 to 1/15 of a second I came away with some very impressive results, with everything considered. The 70-200 F2.8IS was even better with its bright F2.8 aperture. Granted I don't go out all the time shooting in extremes such as that, but the possibilities were quite impressive.
