Easter came a little earlier than usual this year... but the weather cooperated for the most part. I made my annual trek to the Southern Tier region in upstate NY to visit family and chase trains.

Day #1 dawned bright and sunny on NS's Southern Tier Mainline. The frost hadn't even melted when 23K passed through CP Cass (which is in the distance in the 1st shot).

Eastbound 310 was running late when I saw it around midmorning.

Westbound intermodal 23K passed through CP Cass late in the morning.

A pair of eastbound trains, 13T then 38T, came through the interlocking maybe 10 minutes aprt in the middle of the afternoon. NS seems to like running these trains close to each other. (Some of you may remember 13T on the heels of 38T in a pictorial from last month.)

Last, but not last, westbound 12T arrived late in the afternoon.

The following day, Easter, was gray... but the rain held off until I had finished chasing trains and was heading to my sister's place for dinner.

A pair of NS GP38-2s, including a high nose unit, was working the west end of the yard at Gang Mills:

A trio of bigger NS locomotives was idling near the other end of the yard at Gang Mills:

Westbound 23K entered the yard as I was leaving the area, so I couldn't capture it there. I headed west and caught it at Webb Cross in North Hornell about 50-55 minutes later.

I was headed to Elmira when 12T arrived. I got the Saturn turned around and back on the epxressway, intercepting the train on an exit ramp in Gibson.

All photos in this post were taken by me Sunday 3/31/2013 in Steuben County, NY. That's all of my NS action for the weekend. The following day was special, but non-NS, so I will eventually share that in the Nag's Head Lounge as time permits.

As always Matt... nice pictures! Funny thing... after seeing how you "shoot" the end of the train... I have started to do the same! Thanks! Dan

Thanx, Dan. I've always felt the consist of a train is as important as the locomotives, so I try to share it where/when possible. The tail end seems to be a good choice for me, especially if the train is headed in an interesting direction.
