I always try to think up a catchy title for these things, and this one pretty much sums it up.

I drug Carmon out of bed before sunrise this past Saturday (10/13/12) and we headed out into the chilly air to make our way South. The weather was supposed to be fantastic (and for once, it was) and I wanted to check out the progression of the fall colors in Southern Kentucky.

The CNO&TP was fairly slow as we made our way South through Danville, but ATCS showed a healthy stream of trains out of Cincinnati. It was mid-morning before we shot our first train, but after that it was pretty steady the rest of the day. At the end of the day, we had bagged 23 trains, including several Northbounds thanks to the better sun angles this time of year.

The colors where just starting to show, and were not nearly as good as I had hoped for. The tree's down in the deep valleys seemed to have the best color, and I hope that things progress over the next week or two. We spent the rest of the day working between Gradison and Revilo, concentrating on some new angles of old places as well as signals.

Below are a few samples, and as always you can find the entire new set (20 in all) over on Pbase at this link.  http://www.pbase.com/kd4jsl/cs2nddistrict12_eb_

Northbound 142 framed by a nice stand of tree's just North of Science Hill, KY. I had never shot here before, even though I have probably driven past this spot a 1000 times. Something about it just caught my eye this day.

The coal dust is starting to fly as Southbound 704 starts to gain some speed after the long climb out of Danville. The train is seen here at Grradison, KY

Train 117 is down to a crawl as they climb the steep grade out of Burnside, seen here from the Cave Springs bridge at Keno.

While waiting to get the shot of 117, we walked right into the middle of a swarm of these nasty things. There must have been 500 + buzzing around on the bridge at Keno. Thankfully, it was still cool and they where not moving to fast...we got the shot and got the heck out of there!

A "Ex-Con" Dash 8 brings train 197 under the Northbound signal bridge at Whitley City KY. We would see several of these old GE's with those low number boards before the day was done.

A UP leader on train 275 under the signal bridge at Revilo KY

Southbound 229 comes around the sharp reverse curves just North of Revilo, with the idled Southeast coal loadout looming in the background.

Carmon is the Queen of multitasking.  Here she is at Revilo, reading a book, texting, listening to the RR radio and 30 seconds later she would be next to me to shoot the next train. Thats talent!

At one of my favorite places to get out the big glass, The headlight of a late evening Southbound pops over the hill, still over a mile away, as they start down the "roller coaster" profile of the CNO&TP at Gradison. 149 miles out of Cincinnati, with another 181 miles to reach Chattanooga.

NS 50A at Gradison..this is one of my most favorite places to get out the big glass.

"Uniformity in motion"  NS 50A starts over the next little hill at Gradison.

Our last train of the day was Northbound 114 at Gradison. By this time the clouds had started to move in, perfect for a little B&W

Hey E.M., what's the grade at Gradison? It looks fairly steep in your pics.
Got questions? I can help you with the Erie Lackawanna (including predecessors), Lehigh Valley, Delaware & Hudson and the shortlines of upstate NY.
