In case ya happened to miss it, NS ran the inbound Kentucky Derby OCS into Louisville Ky this morning (end sarcasm) :)

I had been hoping for a repeat of last years inbound train, with them getting to the wye in Danville before sunrise, allowing me to try my hand at some night shots. The new 50D was primed and ready for that, but no luck. Due to some signal problems, the train had been delayed over 45 minutes and the sky was already glowing from the impending sunrise by the time they got to the wye to refuel and change crews.  While not what I had wanted, I still managed to get a few keepers and the late arrival meant some excellent early light by the time they got over on the Louisville District.  Larger, Higher resolution images can be found at my Pbase gallery   http://www.pbase.com/kd4jsl/2009_ocs

Enough jibber jabber, here are the pics..

It was not even 0700 when I took these at North Wye, just outside of Danville KY. The train sat here for almost 45 minutes while a fuel truck topped em off and crews swapped out.

The harsh morning sun betrays all the body work these units had done before going into service for the NS, as attested by the side of the 4271's cab.

Southbound 123 scoots by the 955 at the wye.

The light was much better by the time they got to Harrodsburg (KY)   955 is seen here at the signals at East harrodsburg, slowing for the 10mph street running through town.

The last shot of the morning. The OCS crosses the small creek just down the road from JREB world HQ in Salvisa, KY. After this, I let em go, as the light would be just plain wrong the rest of the way across the LS to Louisville.

I enjoyed em E.M. Nice pictures. Good detail too. The 3rd pic down looks like the 4271 has cellulite ::) Seriously though, thanks for sharing.

When the train came in was all units running? It seems like a lot of power for what it pulls. Of course it sure is nice to see a matched set of F's! :)

all the power was online. Those coaches are not as lite as they may look. A heavyweight (which most of the NS biz fleet is) can top out at over 100 tons apeice, so that train was fairly heavy. The CNO&TP and more so the Louisville District, has a lot of hard pulls, so the power was needed.
