Anyone ever see this highway sign (yellow traffic sign in the lower right-hand corner)?

It looks like a low flying aircraft warning . . . over a train track!

Why would you need to alert a driver about aircraft "buzzing" a train(?)

It looks like it might be a warning sign for trucks that they could get a trailer stuck on the crossing.

I think Butch is right that looks like a raised crossing low vehicles may drag sign. Here is what the sign looks like close up http://www.tcpsigns.com/images/warningsigns/W10-524X24Rail-highwayLowGroundClearancesymbol.jpg

Yes, it does. I was a little ahead of the game though because i remember the sign from childhood. When we saw one of those it meant that the rear end of the station wagon would be bumping the ground. (it was a big thrill when I was a kid don't ask why because I don't know)

I have seen pictures of trains getting buzzed in the past. One sticks out because it was a biplane buzzing a steamer if memory serves correct.

A buddy of mine was the fireman on 1218 and he said a vintage plane was buzzing them one time. Later the pilot came to the train and ending up taking my buddy for a plane ride. There was probably no warning signs though.

i've been thinking about this for days and can't figure how jumper cables would help.

An emergency procedure to prevent a collision.

Shorting the rails with the jumper cables will change the signals to indicate the block is occupied, just as if a train were there. If a truck was stuck across the rails, this emergency procedure could prevent a train from arriving at a speed too high to stop short of a collision. A train may still arrive, but it should be going slow enough to stop in time. If the train is so close that it already passed the nearest signal, then placing the cable may not help any.
