A perfect Fall day (in the middle of summer) on the CNO&TP

Last Sunday 07/28. I spent the day with Mr. Odell,  out shooting on the CNO&TP, South of Burnside KY.  I shared my pics of the Reading 1067 a few days ago, and here is the rest of the "regular" stuff we saw.

Even with all of the problems caused by OTTO and all the trains sitting around waiting on crews, there was plenty of other stuff running all day. The constant parade of trains plus plus the abnormally cool temps (sweatshirt weather in the middle of summer) with nothing but sun made for a long and productive day.  The power we saw was less than acceptable, with the 1067 being the only EMD we would get leading all day, but volume of trains and weather more than made up for it..

Below are a few of my favorites, and you can find the entire set by clicking on the link below.

The always hot Northbound UPs traffic is making good time as train 216 rolls across single track between Flatrock and Cumberland Falls KY.

NS has been on a major painting kick of older units recently, including a big batch of spartan cab D9's. I am not a fan of GE products by any means, but I have to say that the 8805 looks pretty sharp leading train 116 at Parkers Lake, kY

Pine knot, Ky is not really the most photogenic of places, but we ran out of options while changing locations and had to grab 143 there. A big ol punkin GE didnt help much either...

Besides the fact the weather was abnormally cool for the end of July, we noticed some other rather unusual aspects of the clear skies. How often can you pull off a shot of the moon like this, in the middle of the day?  Sun at your back, moon at your front at Noon..

Its no secret that the NS (Triplecrown) roadrailers are on the way out, replaced by conventional intermodal service. You would be hard pressed to prove that though, looking at a full 150 trailer consist on train 264.

The Big South Fork Scenics afternoon train is setting at the depot at Stearns Ky, as NS 223 blast through town. The reconstruction of the Stearns store (the biggest building in the background) is coming right along, after burning in 2012.

Southbound 177 is grinding up the hill towards KD tower, looking mighty small surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forrest. The train is seen here near keno, Ky at the Cave Springs Bridge

Another freshly painted D9 brings 177 under the signal bridge at Whitley City, KY. At this late date, there are very few of the old GRS searchlights left standing (without newly installed replacements right next to them), but here at Whitley, no work has been started yet. Its sad to think that this will be the last summer these old things will ever see....but for now, all is right with the world here.

177 has just crossed the State line into Tennessee as it passed through the interlocker at Ratliff TN.

Awesome day, EM! You're right about those horsehead GEs looking good. That's a wonderful moon shot, too.

Looks like you had a real nice day EM. That Moon shot is pretty good.

Up here in Pittsburgh we see many Roadrailers. They are the nosiest of all including empty coke, coal and unit gondola trains.

That moon photo is cool, as are the rest.
As for roadrailers, they're not near as noisy as autoracks in my opinion.

Nice shots, EM! Roadrailers used to unload at Goodman Street in Rochester... prior to the Conrail split... so thanks for sharing.
Got questions? I can help you with the Erie Lackawanna (including predecessors), Lehigh Valley, Delaware & Hudson and the shortlines of upstate NY.
