SD45 with Penn Central markings on the way down Horseshoe Curve in Oct., 1976. Look close and you can see the old PRR Keystone decals on the nose. Pre Heritage unit days. lol.

Very cool! I like seeing the 4th track still there too.

I'll be out in the area next weekend, can't wait to visit the curve again, no matter the current management's performance.

I never tired of visiting the curve. Another favorite was Bennington, just above the curve.

How tough is it to get to Bennington curve? Also can it be done without trespassing? I assume its not too tough but I don't know where to park to begin hiking.

We used to access Benington curve fom State Rd. 22 just south of Gallitzin. I haven't been there in many years but there was a dirt road right off of SR22. A short drive up the dirt road would bring you out right at a great rock cut where you are looking down on the RR. We used to camp over night there.

That is a U-boat tucked in back behind the 45. I didn't note on the slide what type and my memory........let's say I have slept since then.

Thanks for this! I'll keep an eye out for access roads off of old 22 this weekend, I can sort of picture that stretch of road in my mind.

That said, I bet my pop will refuse to check it out on account of his fear of snakes.

Thanks again!
