I was in Louisville this morning, with nothing in particular to do except watch some trains. I heard that 168 had a BNSF leader, and that was enough to get me trackside.

I got to Buechel at 11:45 in time to see 285 go east with NS 9627 and NS 9785, they were behind I23 and T79. These 3 were part of a 6-way meet at Tucker.

I'm pretty sure the first westbound was going by 289, but I can't find that symbol anywhere. It consisted of NS 2594 and NS 2512 lite, nice to see a pair of SD70's.

168 was right behind the pair of engines, with BNSF 5215 and BNSF 7356. It was nice to see some color or a very grey day.

And the third was a 27W, lead by NS 8773 solo. At least this Dash-9 wasn't a wide-cab.

I'm not familiar with the 27W train symbol either, can anyone enlighten me with info on either of these?

John, that would be a 239, not 289. Most days he will set out most, if not all, of his train at the mixing center and go into Louisville with just the power.

Not bad for such a crappy day...I never even bothered to leave the house!

Well Emmett, I would usually take that for an answer. But 239 came later in the afternoon, and did have a train today. I didn't manage to catch anything else on NS, because everything was a 9XXX-series catfish. But 223, 23G, 239, I24 were mentioned... Any chance there would be two 239's?

There may have been Two 239's, but probably not that close together.  I have never heard of that 289, but It may well have been. We have seen some odd numbered moves over here, more so with rack trains. Seems like anytime they need to move a bunch of racks, they just grab a train number from nowhere and run it!

That may be a new move as well. I have heard a few odd numbers lately, including that 68R steel slab train that seems to run once or twice a month.

That may not have been 239 I saw. Since I do not have a scanner I cannot verify the actual train symbol I see. I usually go by a visual and then match the type of train to the symbol it usually operates under. Doing a google search of 239 I see that is the train that goes to Illinois or from Illinois to the mixing center. That lite power move is the returning train from the early morning autorack to the mixing center. A local as that would be called should be a T something right? It used to be on a Tuesday is was almost guaranteed to return just power from the mixing center. Lately they have been running 2 and even 3 westbound trains from the mixing center. They often stack them up and run them all through on the same set of signals. This sort of scares me because I witness lots of trespassers walking down the center of the tracks. I've seen a lot lately both at Buechel and through J-Town along Six Mile Lane since there is not a sidewalk people use the railroad as their personal walking path. I just know that after a train goes by they swarm back on the tracks and with them running two and three autoracks someone is gonna get smashed sooner or later. I took some photos Thursday of 3 sets of trespassers at Beuchel down near the signal lights.

I still can't believe I missed all that action today. But I had to work for a few hours this morning and I guess money comes before hobbies.

239 runs from Georgetown KY. to Kansas City MO. And, 239 was holding the siding at Tucker around 3 while 223 and 23G worked Buechel. I know that 239 had NS 2589 in the lead. I would have liked to shot 2589, but I didn't have the time to wait around.

239 was the train I saw then. 2589 was parked right next to the switch at Tucker.

It was in fact 289 with NS 2594 and NS 2512 doing the work.  I went to the mainframe and looked it up.  289 is run a couple times a week.  It comes up from the south somewhere cause we get on it at Danville instead of out at the wye like 239.

Thanks for clearing that up memphis2857, anybody got anything on 27W?
