I headed down to the Southern Tier (of NY) last weekend to celebrate my birthday with family. It was a no-brainer to arrive a day early and patiently wait for action on the former Erie/EL mainline. Eventually, this westbound freight arrived in the late afternoon.

Got questions? I can help you with the Erie Lackawanna (including predecessors), Lehigh Valley, Delaware & Hudson and the shortlines of upstate NY.

The train crosses Jackson Road... with the EMD's turbocharger echoing off the valley walls.

Given the short length of the westbound mixed freight, it's a safe bet to assume the train was symbol 309. That's the return trip of the daily transfer run to Gang Mills, heading back to Bison Yard.

The Southern Tier Mainline (which includes this section of the former Erie/EL main) was unusually quiet that day. I left about an hour after 309 faded into the distance and it was the only train I saw.
