I had to go down to Somerset Sunday morning to do a little photography for work, and after that was out of the way spent the rest of the day out shooting the NS . We Stayed (mostly) South of Somerset in the better scenery. Here are the good ones from the day.
From chatter on the radio, we knew there would be a good parade of Southbound, lead by the "Three little piggies" as the South End Dispatcher called them....oh, with a slow manifest in the middle for good measure. The first train of the day was the 295 rack train, seen here at "Dead Ox Hollow" also known as Keno KY.

Somehow, a rather long and heavy 123 was kinda keeping up with the 295, and we just had time to move down to Deep Hollow for him.

Running right behind 123 was the hot 215. We move back North a few miles to get him at Garland Bend near Tateville.

After a bit of spirited driving we got back ahead of the 215 again at Cumberland Falls.

One thing about the afternoons on the CNO&TP, you never have to wait very long for something to shoot. Not 15 mins behind the 215 was the 223..the last of the piggies.. I slapped the big glass on the 50D and took a stroll through the Kudzu to shoot 223 coming through the CP at Cumberland Falls. Note the newly installed signals here.

And as it seems to have went, not 20 minutes behind 223 was the 285. The light was perfect at the big Cut at Wiborg (KY), and thats where we shoot him,

After all of that in a 2 hour time span, we eased on back to Somerset for a late lunch. Carmon was with me, enjoying her first trip out on the 2nd District, and for some reason that I cant explain, we stopped and had a SIT DOWN lunch. No Ale 8 and crackers on the run, a honest to god real sit down lunch. She must be special because...well, just ask anyone that has went out shooting with me...you dont eat till the sun goes down or the trains stop running!
On the way back towards JREB world HQ, we stopped to shoot one more train, the Northbound 124 at Fairy Curve in Norwood. The RR has done some brush cutting down through this spot, and had opened up a kick ass NB shot. After composing what would have been the shot of the day, I got greedy at the last minute as the train came into view. Instead of going for the shot I wanted, and changed my mind at the last minute and tried a crappy broadside, THEN went for the shot I wanted. Alas, by the time I got back to where I wanted to be, the train was to far past the spot so this is what I wound up with...oh well, always next time..
