Title: Close encounters of the 90Mac kind
Post by: E.M. Bell on August 15, 2009, 08:08:36 PM
This really is not a trip report, because It was not a trip to see trains...but you know....

Went out for lunch and a Saturday drive with Carmon this afternoon, wasnt planning on seeing a train, so didnt take the camera or radio. Took the Scenic route back home and we found ourselves in Danville KY at the NS yard...thats the "you know" part....but hey, it was on the way home..

I spied a train with a UP motor switching in the East yard, and after waiting for a minute figured out it has a UP SD90Mac leading. No radio, didnt know what train it was, if they where just switching or ready to leave, and didnt have a camera anyway....not quite.   Knowing the pain I was in with a EMD leader and no camera, Carmon produces a little P&S Kodak thing from her purse.

I had "deduced" that given the time of day, direction of the train and the fact it was a slop freight, it was "probably" 160 headed to Louisville. We went out to the Wye on the Louisville District side and waited...and what do ya know, I had deduced right!  I did my best to look like a cool Canon Using man, pointed the P&S thing at the train and managed a somewhat usable image...chased him West a bit and did the same at Harrodsburg and Vanarsdale.

EB's rule #1 of photography was broken....ALWAYS take your camera with you no matter what.  I pay for that by admitting the shame of the P&S usage, and hang my head in shame ready for the public flogging..

I won't give you too much of a flogging for it. Who hasn't seen something the one time they don't have the camera. I would have loved to see the look on your face standing there waiting with a P&S.
