I went up to Altoona, Pennsylvania this past weekend to check out the NS West Slope, train action was a little slower than I've come to expect from the NS, especially on the Pittsburgh Line, but it wasn't bad.
Here's a few photos from the trip:
1) A fairly clean pair of CR SD60M's leads a Westbound coal train out of Gallitzin Tunnel in Gallitzen, PA.
2) Sticking to the theme, a pair of SD70M-2 is seen here at Horseshoe Curve leading a Westbound van train.
3) NS 227 Westbound at Pinecroft, PA on the NS Middle Division (East of Altoona)
4) NS 7209, one of the few remaining SD80MACs with CR Blue is seen sitting with 4 sisters at the South Fork Yard.
<to be continued>
5) Nose on look at the NS 7209, formerly CR 4116.
6) A pair of former CONRAIL SD40-2's is seen here helping to push a long Eastbound manifest up the West Slope of the Alleghenies.
7) Yet another pair of helpers is providing braking assistance for a Westbound train down the grade.
8) NS SD70M #2596 leading an Eastbound manifest towards Altoona, as another railfan gets his shot.
9) I wasn't about to let the harsh lighting from a high sun keep me from shooting trains when they passed. Here SD70M-2 #2745 leads a BNSF Warbonnet Westbound at Gallitzin.
10) A pair of Horsehead SD40-2's helps push an Eastbound manifest up against the grade just West of Johnstown, PA.
11) And of course, the talk of the town was Bennett Levins PRR E8A's. This photo was taken on Sunday morning at "Doorneck Point" near Johnstown.
12) The PRR E8A's head West at Cresson, PA bound for Pittsburgh on Saturday evening.

Bonus) An Eastbound NS van train crosses over the concrete arch bridge over the Conemaugh River in Johnstown, PA. A location more commonly known as "The Point".
