I headed out to greater Buffalo at the end of last week. Since it was Friday the 13th, I was hearing the usually yapping about it being an unlucky day. Wrong! It turned out very well- there was plenty of action.
Local H0K, powered by a venerable SD40-2, was already working at Buffalo Creek Junction when I got to Tifft Street shortly before 8 AM.

Both of the preceding shots were taken by me in Buffalo, NY on Friday 9/13/2013.
I also caught westbound mixed freight 309 at the Lake Avenue crossing near GB diamond.

Both of the preceding photos were taken by me Friday 9/13/2013 in Blasdell, NY.
This westbound intermodal freight (not sure of the symbol) eased out onto the Bison Runner early in the afternoon.

I headed back to Tifft Street. While waiting for the intermodal, I noticed something unusual and cool. The Buffalo & Pittsburgh RR was interchanging with the Buffalo Southern in the BSOR yard at Buffalo Creek Junction. Shortline to shortline interchange is not very common these days, so I was happy to learn something new on this trip.

The westbound NS intermodal snakes through Buffalo Creek Junction in the early afternoon. SD40-2 #3410 (seen earlier) has finished her duties fpr the day and was parked in the yard.

This is why I love Buffalo Creek Junction- multiple trains can be seen there at that same time. In this case, the tail end of the of NS intermodal freight is at left, while CSX has 4 trains on its tracks.

All photos in this post were taken by me Friday 9/13/2013 in the City of Buffalo, NY.
Later in the afternoon I went back to the Lake Avenue crossing. The first eastbound intermodal freight I saw there had an ex-Conrail SD70 as the leading unit.

The second eastbound intermodal freight at Lake Avenue was led by a widecab Dash 9.

All 4 of the prededing photos were taken by me Friday 9/13/2013 in Blasdell, NY.
I ended the day at Bison Yard, where a couple of widecabs were shuffling cars:

The same widecabs as seen from the former Lehigh Valley RR mainline, which is now a trail next to NS.

Both of the preceding photos were taken by me Friday 9/13/2013 in Cheektowaga, NY. I don't care what superstitious folks say- it was a nice, lucky day for RR action in western New York.
Nice shots Matt! Always like catching a SD70 standard cab leading! And, it seems the last two weeks has been SD40-2 lucky for alot of people on JREB! LOL! DE Dan
Thanx, Dan. Here's an interesting fact from the special locomotive issue of Trains: NS has more SD40-2s (435 units) than the combined total of ES40DCs amd ES44ACs (361 units). I guess the old hot rods still have alot of life left in them.
I agree on the SD70, too. 8)

I am sure that will change in a year or two as NS keeps buying AC locos. And I just noticed the "NY license test" sign... testing on the RR tracks... that explains alot!!! LOL! DE Dan

It was a convenient place to stand. There were not many students that day.
Great set of photos! And as for Friday September 13th, I only ever had one unlucky experience which was in 1996, when I left Shaw AFB for 3 months in Saudi Arabia!
Great shots!
PA Dan
PS the NY license test sign is placed in a funny location.

Thanx! It took me a while to get the humor you and DE Dan saw, but now I get it. ;)
I think the sign is perfect for a license test! Drive to the left...pass! Drive to the right and onto the RR Tracks... FAIL!!! LOL! DE Dan
