Title: A Saturday in the Mountains
Post by: Ptrainman on July 31, 2013, 08:36:51 PM
Ive been working some really long and crazy hours lately so I haven't had much time to get on the computer much less do any major railfanning. On Sat 7/20/13 I got up well before light and headed to Roanoke to meet a friend and head west into the mountains. It was my first trip since chasing 630 out of Roanoke in March so I was well over due. We did very well that day with my total for the day ending at 18 trains in 16 hours, the best I had ever done.

The products of the entire trip can be seen here:http://southernrailsphotography.smugmug.com/Trains/2013-Rail-Photography/30773226_VtjNBg (http://southernrailsphotography.smugmug.com/Trains/2013-Rail-Photography/30773226_VtjNBg)

First one of the day was cursed, it had a GE leading and that is what we shot all day. 3 widebody Trash 9s and a SD60 bring 236 around the curve at Shawsville.

We got to Slate Hill Tunnel on the Whitethrone side just in time to catch 194 rolling out of the tunnel VERY slowly.

194 was moving so slow that we were able to get back ahead of him at Bradshaw even though we had to go almost twice as far as he did.

Finally got my first taste of West Virginia when we went to Oakvale to catch the 765 with a Warbonnet trailing.

A couple fairly new ES44ACs lead train across the old Virginian trestle at Oakvale,WV.

This was my favorite all day. 189 rolls south (RR west) at Pearisburg, VA.
