Title: Results from 10/7 Rathole Trip
Post by: Ns Railfan on October 09, 2006, 08:35:50 AM
On a  crisp October saturday morning I left Knoxville Tn. for the traditional 50 minute drive to Oneida Tn. my expectations were high. Only to be crushed by a lack of trains. I only saw 9 trains in 7 hours. Anyway here is my report.

1. Bear Creek Tn.          I83   NS 9528
2. Parkers Lake Ky.     174  NS 8342 (blue ex-Conrail)
3. Keno Rd. overpass 264  NS ---- (C40-9W)
4. Keno Rd. overpass 230  NS 8915
5. Tateville                     179   NS 9589
6. Burnside Bridge       223  NS 9827 (at least it had fresh paint)
7. Ratliff                           124  NS 8365 (black ex-Conrail)
8. Ratliff                            179 UP 4823 ( Only EMD all day)
9. Pemberton                 229 NS 9437 (My favorite train!!!) :)

Hopefully next weekend will be more productive.

Looks like your Saturday stacked up about like my Sunday...  How are the colors down that way? It still no where near peak around Danville, and I am planning a couple of trips down South over the next Two weeks to shoot..

I would have to guess that the colors are still mabey 1 to 2 weeks away from peak. I made it all the way to Tateville and the hill if you are faceing north is just starting to change and it would make for a great shot for southbounds. Also I noticed that around the Keno Rd. area the leaves are changing quicker than any where else I  saw. I am planning a trip back this coming saturday the 14th and the next friday the 20th. I will keep you posted and any changes.

Note: As a point of information there is as of saturday the 7th 5 or 6 GP38-2 ex-UP now owned by WAMX sitting on a storage track. I could not tell but some might still have the Applachia and Ohio logos still on them.

Just picking nits here but aren't the units in Onieda ex-CNW GP50s?  I stopped in by there on the way home back in August but couldn't get any shots of them.  Anybody know if the lumber yard there in Onieda is railfan friendly?  It looked like the only way to get down to the power was through the lumber yard.

I'm not for sure but they sure do look like ex-CNW units I noticed with the bell in the nose. They have been moved away from the fueling area towards  the road where you gain acess to the lumber yard. I nocked off a few roster shots they were not to impressing but good for my personal roster.

E.M.

I am taking these to fridays off too my best time though is in the morings to early afternoon as I work an evening job. We need to get to gather and shoot. I usuall try to be in Oneida at around 7:00 to 7:30 am. Tell me where we should meet up and Ill be there!
