Title: NS action on the Louisville District and CNO&TP in February
Post by: E.M. Bell on March 03, 2013, 07:36:55 PM
I usually don't get out all that much this time of year to shoot, unless we have a good snowfall (which has not happened this year...yet), but with all of the Heritage unit action we have had, I have accumulated a lot of new material. Below are a few odds and ends that I have shot over the past month on the Louisville District and the CNO&TP.

I am not giving up hope for a good ol March blizzard, but for now, this will have to do..If you have a little time to kill, check out the Two links below for some late winter NS action here in Central KY.

Louisville District.  http://www.pbase.com/kd4jsl/ls13eb (http://www.pbase.com/kd4jsl/ls13eb)

02/17/13  Northbound 170 crosses over the New River Bridge on a cold Sunday morning. Dont let that sunshine fool you, Adam, Caleb and I about missed this train...couldn't hear it coming over the sound of our teeth chattering :)

Southbound 197 leaps across the New River Valley under a perfect blue sky

A old EMD in fresh new paint is always a good thnig...NS 1648 sits on the point of crewless ballast train, tied down in the new yard at Burnside KY

A middle aged GE in fresh new paint is not always a good thing, but at least this is a standard cab. NS 117 grinds up the hill at Garlands Bend, just South of Tateville KY. You can see another one of the new GE frames right behind the power.

A railroaders salute.. Adam says howdy to the crew on 117 as they give us a little horn salute of their own.

Good Timing is the key.....It's almost 6:30 in the evening and the sun is all but gone, leaving long shadows and streaks of golden light filtering through the tree's. The sound of hard working EMD's can be heard in the distance, lifting a Southbound coal train across the top of Kings Mountain. Soon, NS 890 appears around the curve and I wait for the lead engine to catch a little light in one of those patches of sun. EMD's on the CNO&TP in the "sweet light" Last shot of the day, and one of my favorites.

Butch is way down on the banks of Lake Cumberland in Burnside, once again showing off his uncanny ability to get to places most mountain goats would not dare try..

02/23/13  Long hood forward EMD...we got that!  (even if it is going the other way)  NS 1061 is shoving her innards out helping to shove a loaded coal train out of the siding at Talmage KY

Eastbound 793 starts through the big dip at Convoy KY with 120 loads of Indiana coal headed to Georgia

The headend of 793 meets a good looking redheaded rear end at the Jackson Pike road crossing at Convoy KY

02/24/13  A fine looking former Conrail EMD is on the point of Westbound train 112 as they cross the Ohio River and wind around the riverfront in New Albany Indiana last Sunday morning. This is the CP at "Tatem" and the Western end of the Central Div. Once the train enters single track just ahead, it will be on the Illinois Div for the trip to St. Louis.

Red Dwarf...  Westbound 22A pops up over the crest of the hill at East Tucker, ready to meet 23G and I-23

After 22A drags into the clear, 23G gets on the move away from Tucker, KY.
