I caught 112 a few minutes ago with a newly rebuilt unibrow cab, then it hit me, I have a shot of an old unique southern unit with the same road number. Both of these engines are wonderfully unique, even if we can't agree on beauty vs ugly. First is my ancient alco cab unit in a surprising tuxedo paint scheme, next is todays 6904 with the unibrow cab. Must be something in a road number I suppose.....
Southern Railway road number 6904 was also an E-8 that pulled The Southern Crescent. It was wrecked on October 8th, 1977 in a derailment at Spencer Yard, Spencer, NC. I was on the train. The engineer's name was Sam Sharpe.

Yeah I had heard about that engine but didn't have a shot of it, that old alco is definitely not the unit people think of when they hear that number, that E is.
I would have to go with the Alco... for unique. The SD60E for ugh, ugh, ugh...ugly. And the E unit as beautiful... I saw one in Southern Paint at the RR museum in Duluith, GA. But, just my two cents.
Here's another view of the derailment.

You hit the nail on the head, I could not agree more.
