Granted, this is the "competition" but I thought folks might like to see one of the current SARM projects....

We've started a new project at SARM.  L&N 1310 has left the deadline for some preservation and evaluation work.  Among other things we're working to get a set of main bearings installed and a power assembly (head, liner, piston, connecting rod) replaced.  If nothing else this would keep water out of the prime mover, and allow us to run the thing long enough to see if its worth further effort.

Here are a few photos from last Saturday:

Lovely! that locomotive fleet you got going down there sure is going to look nice when it's done!

Hey Charlie, I live kinda close to Oak Ridge. I would like to visit you guys working on these engines. Do you mind if me and dad come down one day you are working?

We work most Saturdays, including tomorrow, and help is always welcome.  Be warned, we get somewhere between a little dirty and completely filthy when we work -- so dress accordingly.  Also, the filth in a locomotive engine room seldom washes off hands and clothes easily!  NOTHING we do on a locomotive is easy -- it all ranges from difficult to impossible.  NOTHING on the railroad is lightweight.  You don't need any special skill, training or ability -- we are willing to train you, but you'll need to be tougher than the locomotive or it'll win.  We hate seeing someone standing around bored, so you can expect to be issued a wrench, grinder, sander, etc. and a project!  And last but not least, we'll need to get you signed up as a museum member ($30 per year IIRC) so we have you covered on our insurance.

If you need directions or other info on our work parties or operating days, feel free to call our ticket office, and they can help you out or get you in touch with me.  The number is 865-241-2140
