I headed out this morning down towards Danville (Ky) to see how the fall colors where progressing, and to enjoy a wonderful fall day away from work. The colors are still not at peak, but the NS seemed busy, so I got geared up for a good day.. To make a long story painfully short..I saw or shot 19 trains...and only Two had a EMD leading. Still, the weather was perfect and I hadnt been out shooting for almost a Month, so I took what I could get..

To start things out in fine fashion, I broke all the rules of railroad photography (would you expect any less??) and aimed the Canon directly into the morning sun to capture Westbound 294 at South Wye. 294 is normally a solid rack train, but todays version looked more like a grain train with a huge cut of empties ahead of the multi-levels.  I kinda liked the resulting backlit shot..you can be the judge...(Clicking on any of the thumbnails will get you a bigger image)

next up was a empty 733 coall train with a Trio of BNSF motors. Coal trains are somewhat unusual in this area, and I later learned that this was the second empty train to run this morning. A 739 had left Danville sometime early in the morning. I went for the old backlit shot again, just to see what I could do.

NS 283 at Bowen KY

NS 143 arrived at Danville around 11:30am with the most colorful engine consist of the day. A BNSF D9, MRL SD40-2XR and a UP SD40-2T.

MRL 264 on NS 143

UP 2860 on NS 143 at Danville Ky

Southbound 215 passes 375 at North Wye.

Yet anouther of the seemingly endless parade of GE products lead 223 at Shuttleworth on the LS.

And a bit later..NS 111 just East of Harrodsburg Ky on the LS..

The good one of the day..NS 116 leaves Danville on the North main behind NS 6119...

Later in the afternoon, we headed North up to Burgin for a couple..

A whitefaced D9 powers 236 past Brights Bottlegas at Burgin Ky

Want to find a neat way to mask the common NS Dash-9?? Hide it behind a Hermosa Tree!! I was just playing around at this point, but I like the way it turned out.. Not your standard wedgie by any means. NS 287 At Burgin..

Did all of the EMD's head south for the winter? ;)

Great essay!! Glad to see some coal trains running the Louisville Dst again. Just like the ole SOUTHERN days.  ;D
