Which unit was the first unit to be painted in the horse head scheme?

The 1000 is indeed a load test unit. Formerly the Q1. At one point it really did have a special paint scheme, it was built as EL 3632, which recieved one of the EL's two bicentenial schemes about 1974 (SDP45 3638 was the other). By the way I always thought that those CAT units were pretty neat. Also was there not two versions of the TransCaer scheme? I thought that it was the same unit but the logo was changed, I could be wrong though.
