Title: Columbus Georgia
Post by: lwjabo on June 29, 2015, 01:39:59 AM
Back in the 70s there was a Coast line track into Columbus Georgia. It was abandoned. I do remember seeing there engine at least one time. Where did the line run to? I've looked every where and can't find anything.

This line belonged to the Seaboard Air Line.  It ran south out of Columbus to Richland, GA where it crossed Seaboard's Montgomery, AL - Savannah, GA line.  Richland was the hub of the area with a yard and locomotive facilities.  Heading south out of Richland, the line continued to Tallahassee, FL where it joined up with Seaboard's Jacksonville, FL - Chattahoochee, FL line.

Before the 1967 merger with the ACL, Seaboard was running 4 freight trains a day on the line in and out of Columbus.  These trains were:

74 "The Cavalcade"  Columbus, GA - Jacksonville, FL
91 "The Red Fox"  Jacksonville, FL - Columbus, GA
96 Through Freight  Columbus, GA - Jacksonville, FL
99 Through Freight  Richland, GA - Columbus, GA
