Out wandering around Knoxville today trying to catch some trains (rather unsuccessfully) in the melting snow. Happened upon this stopped Herzog train and thought this was rather interesting.

Why would there be a mailbox here? This is just along a siding (the one just south of the Willoughby diamond with CSXT's KD Sub to be exact)

What you have there is a low-tech fax machine....Its a waybill box!

Those used to be pretty common (and found in many forms) in locations where 2 RR's would interchange cars. The conductor making the set-out would put the bills in the box for the crew that was making the pick-up to get.

There used to be one in City yard as well, that we (the KXHR) used for stuff NS left for the South Knoxville line. With CYO, RIT, and what not now, I doubt that method is still used much, except for maybe hazmats. If you didn't have a box handy, you could always wrap the paperwork around a fussee and stick it in a knuckle as well..

There is one at the NS/CSX diamond at Selma, NC. I find it odd they didn't put about a quarter mile away where the two roads share a connecting interchange track. It was just installed after CSX replaced the diamond in 2011.
