Wind Socks

There are two wind socks that have been at either end of the former Conrail Moraine Yard in Moraine, Ohio for some time. Is there any particular reason for having windsocks at a railroad yard?

Wind socks are common at railroad yards and places where chemicals are made or stored. In the event of a chemical leak or emergency, the wind's direction must be known.
