The Green Wing and intermodal

Having noticed the explosion of the Green Wing (or what ever the competitors call it) air foil on the underside on truck trailers, I was wondering if it causes any problem with intermodal shipping? Does it get in the way of any 5th wheel latches or well car appliances? Are all trailers lifted from the top when set on flats?

Related question: I have seen so many of these things spring up on a wide variety of truck carriers in a very short time span it seem difficult to think this is a "lets give it a try and see if it saves fuel kind of thing?" Is there any regulations requiring this?

trailers are lifted from the side rails. the wings are far enough in they shouldn't be in the way. give em time, someone will find a way to damage them. they are required by law on all new trailers going into CA.. they've not been tested, someone just told CA. that it looks like they will help so CA. made it a law. i'm not smart but it looks like they might help with head winds but hurt with cross winds.
