Gene Hardy created both of the territories we have here at Jreb, and did a wonderful job with them.  Pretty much realistic traffic patterns through out the week for both the CNO&TP North end dispatcher and the Louisville district dispatcher. Only thing that is off is the LS is "CTC" controlled as the game has no way of simulating TW's.

I've been working on Georgia Division Atlanta North (2008) for a while.  Here are a few pictures.  I still need to name the signals and tweak the train schedules.

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r310/tb4jy/Trains/td3_03.jpg

I had the Atlanta South District (Atlanta to Macon) done mid 2007, but when I had a hard drive failure I lost it.  I'll redo it sooner or later.

I really got to be in the mood to do this stuff.  I can get in railroad overload, at which time I won't even look at this stuff for a couple of weeks.

I would love to have the CSX KD Sub. territory to play. The KD is one very challenging railroad.

Glad to hear that someone is still getting some use out of them!  I've been on a pretty long break in working on anything new.    Since it's 10 degrees outside, UK Basketball sucks and football's over, I might need a spare time project again!   ;D

With regards to the CSX 'KD', I've got the CC portion of the railroad done and have thought of adding the KD portion to the end of it (as it used to be dispatched in the old AQ days), but my lack of knowledge of operations in that part of the world has kept me from trying to build it.

I've already got the CC sub trains scheduled, so I would have a 'head start' on adding at least part of the work in adding the stuff south of Corbin to it, but would need a LOT of help from someone down that way to advise me as to 'how things work' to try it.

 8) The CSX Atlanta to Chattanooga, and Junta to Etawah divisions are available as one route, via payware.

The Atlanta to Chattanooga NS route, is freeware, available for the TD3 demo.

The second division, has long been out, as freeware...

However all the routes must be over five years old, and updating is needed.

It looks like there is a good 2008 update of the Atl North DS coming down the line.  The sim that is out there now is from 2000...

As for the Southend between Somerset and Chattanooga, I know of one that has been done for pretty recent conditions (2007) but has not been released.  I'll contact the guy who did them and see if he has any plans to do a public release.  For the site admins...would you consider adding this sim to the TD3 page (it is Central Div, after all) if I can arrange this?

I have had a chance to "test drive" the new 2008 Atlanta North End territory that Bob did, and its simply awesome! I never knew that line had that much traffic..its as hard or harder than the Louisville district sim, and he doesnt even have it finished yet.  It will be  a crowd pleaser for sure.

The NS Central div  sims that our members have done (that i know of) are...

1st and 2nd districts of the CNO&TP, North end Dispatcher between Cinncy and Grove KY, by Gene Hardy..

NS Louisville District, K&I JCT to Danville KY by Gene Hardy

2nd and 3rd districts of the CNO&TP, South End dispatcher between Grove KY and Cave Springs Tn  by Tracy L. Underwood, 2004

older version of the one above, also by tracy, from 2001

Another fellow also did the Louisville district, but i lost it in a hard drive crash and cant remember who it was, my apologies..

There was also a old school version of the CNO&TP that came out with TD 2, but I didnt care for it much...a little to simple for me.

JREB would be more than happy to host any of TD3 territories that anyone may be working on.   I am rather addicted to the game to tell the truth, and love getting to test drive the new ones :)

Ok well I finally got TD3. Now my next question is...Does anyone happen to know where I could find a LCL Territory?

I'm working on one for the CL DS which includes the LCL sub.  I'll post some screen captures of my displays later tonight...it should be enough to get you drooling!

I most certainly plan on making all my territories free.  I enjoy putting work into building them and enjoy hearing from folks that are enjoying them.

Here's a few preview shots of my CL DS display boards-

Also, before I can get to work in earnest on the CL, I've got to finish up some playtesting and minor bug fixing on my AJ DS sim...Here's what this sim will look like:

I've found that I have to disable my McAfee Privacy Service in order to see embedded photos in threads...perhaps others have some firewall or other protective software that does the same thing.  It's funny, telling the program that jreb is a safe site is not enough...the whole thing has to be disabled.

Here's links to these images off the jreb site, maybe you'll have better luck!

I have a 1280x900 monitor resolultion, so that is what I have designed the CL desk to fit in - at least in width.  My AJ DS fits in a 1024 width screen.  Are enough people out there still using 1024 as the resolution width that I should stick with that?
Title: Re: Where can I find Train Dispatcher 3?
Post by: ssw9662 on January 17, 2008, 01:21:16 PM
Nice! That AJ DS sim looks pretty challenging. Train Dispatcher is a fun game, I've been playing TD3 (And TD2 before that) for about eight years now.  I got TB3 as a Christmas gift this year, and I have a few territories in progress now (One of them is in the playtesting stage).

BTW I use 1280x768, so wider territories wouldn't bother me.

Post by: E.M. Bell on January 17, 2008, 05:13:48 PM
1024 is my standard, but I have been known to resize for certain territories, as it gets to be a pain in the tukus scrolling back and forth, up and down.

Post by: bsbaxter on January 17, 2008, 10:48:14 PM
I may look at working it into a 1024 width...it seems that like most folks are comfortable with that.

It's good to see some other TD3 enthusiasts on the forum...good discussion!

I have to agree with Brandon. Up until recently, I had thought that Gene Hardy, Caleb and myself where the only ones on the board  that had any interest in the game.   If done right, TD3 makes you think, plan ahead and pull your hair out at times. Its give a very brief glance into what the folks that really do Dispatch for a living go through, and we dont have to contend with the radio, the phone ringing all the time, and a chief DS looking over your shoulder..

I have tried out the other rail games out there, and just was not impressed. MS Train sim was "neat" but I found it to be most unrealistic in the way the trains handled ect, but having real life experience   at the throttle makes one somewhat bias I guess. I have been a fan of TD since the first version came out years ago...I just hope that Signal Consultants will keep it alive.

 8) First, all the resolutions presented, did not say what size the monitor is...

I'm running a damn 19 inch wide-screen monitor(I can't for the life of me, figure out why everything went "wide-screen").

The native resolution is 1440x900....I bet you don't even recognize this res.

I wish to get a 17" flat panel, standard resolution monitor(cheaply), that can handle 1024x768.  I'm familiar with that.

Yes, Microsoft Train Simulator, is a dog....that deserves the trashing it gets!

If you wish to enjoy a realistic train ride, check out Auran Trainz Simulator 2006.  The cabs are correct, the sound is real, the routes(Clinchfield Railroad, Tehachapi Loop, Asheville to Old Fort(the Loops), Digital Elevation Models, that have the real world terrain modeled, including the hard grades of each respective railroad).  All the old timers, all the paint schemes, all the latest locomotives, are available, to run the wheels off.  There is what I call the Mother of All Game Controllers, the RailDriver Desktop, that allows consistently accurate control of the dynamics of train handling.

The only more realistic train simulation, is the motion simulator, the TS-3 Trainer, used by NS, BNSF, CSX(the Conrail), UP.  These, use a real world scenery, created by a camera on the front of a locomotive running the route to be simulated, at $500 per mile.

Flight Simulator Ten(FS-X), uses a similar method(satellite overview), and that's the only way to better, what is currently available as a train-sim.

Yes, I enjoy running Train3(TrainDispatcher3), on the Atlanta to Chattanooga Route, the Danville to Oakdale Route, and have others, however the lack of ability to view the larger routes, scares me...

I print out the train list, with entry times, and prefer to have the Active Train List on screen, whilst I operate.
Title: Re: Where can I find Train Dispatcher 3?
Post by: bsbaxter on January 18, 2008, 08:20:19 AM
I too prefer to have the Active Train list window open all the time while I am playing.  I usually try to leave enough room along the bottom of my sims so that I can have the window open showing 2-3 lines of train info and still see entire territory.  Most territories are so large that they can't be squeezed onto one screen, so my preference is to scroll vertically instead of horizontally.  With all of the other software packages that require vertical scrolling (IE, for example, on this website!), I don't find it to be a big problem.

Any of you who were working on new territories back a month or so ago made enough progress to share one of your new routes?

I actually finished playtesting a full week of my AJ just a few hours ago (and have already fixed the few bugs that were left)!

I need to dust off and update the sim notes that I had put together many months ago, but I'd be happy to send it out after that...

I liked TD3 but found dislikes with it. There was never any suffient tutorial made and never having worked for a RR I was almost always running behind with my train schedules. I had considered buying some of the TD books softrail has available but they seem a bit pricey. I haven't played the game for quite awhile now for that reason. It would help to have a better understanding of how to more effeiciently work the yards or system sections.

 8) J484, I agree, there is plenty of instruction about how to use the sim, but not much about why.

On the web, the books offered by SignalCC, are the best bets on learning modern railroad practices, because they are so comprehensive.  Any other way of learning, would probably cost more in the long run, and so much would probably be left out.

Several training sources use those particular books for their curriculum.

Thanks Backyard, The sims that were probably my favorites were NS's Decatur, IL, CSX Queensgate Yard and the Powder River Basin where you were running nothing but coal trains. I would still like to learn enough about the game to eventually create a sim for Elkhart Yard. I'd like to see more NS creations featuring the busiest yards in their system. I like the yard sims better because there is more to do.
Actually, if it were possible a game using the best features of TD3 RT3 and Auranz Trainz would be the coolest thing. Don't know if we have the tech yet for something of that magnitude anyway.
A touch on the Railroad Tycoon series I liked was to take a fledling RR and see how big a system you could wind up with.
Wonder if that idea would work in a MMOG?

 8) Well, you never know, I'd like to see a train3 and TRS2006 combo, several routes in Auran TRS, are documented in train3(TD3), however the interaction is not there...yet.

Mostly, anything you can learn, by book, train3, .pdf, video, whatever, is good to learn, before attempting train simulators.

Never run a route, you don't know!

For those on here that had problems with seeing images: select Tools, Internet options, advanced tab, then hit the reset button. I was getting a security pop-up just trying to get to Jreb's home page a while ago. After tinkering with a few other options, that was the only one that worked.

Also in regards to the mention of MSTS, I agree. The few sims I played on that there was not near enough realistic traffic levels for some. The one I had I liked best was Cajon Pass. The thing I hated worst was the royal pain it was to upload things to enhance the game, into the system. Items such as files for more realistic trees and grass etc, etc. I'm not one of those guys that is good at programming or game designing or any of that stuff. I get ticked off too darn quick with the way most of those options are set up. I'd rather share my ideas with someone who has the experience and know how, then help out where I can.

Well...I guess I could give it a shot, I'm always up for a challenge.

Problem is, I've only ever seen about the first 5 miles of the entire territory first hand, so I would need a lot of assistance with track charts, train schedules, grades, signals, local work areas...let's see, that's pretty much everything!   :D

If anyone has the materials to send me and the patience to endure a million questions, I can give it a whirl!
