Uh Oh...New FRA Rules and Fines For Trainmen

The FRA has approved some new rules and fines that can be
assessed to trainmen. They were supposed to take effect on
April 14th, but the FRA stated it was going to delay that date,
but apparently didn't post it properly so the rules are in effect.

The new rules are the result of an FRA study that 38 percent of
accidents are due to human mistakes.

Failure to leave equipment in the clear - $9,500.
A willful violation is $13,000.

Failure to conduct a job briefing before making a shove - $7,500 to $9,500.
Willful $11,000 to $13,000

Failure to establish point protection when using remote control $9,500.
Willful $13,000

Failure to observe a shove $9,500.
Willful $13,000

Failure to properly position switches $7,500

Failure to follow procedures for main line switches $7,500

Failure to properly release authority limits $12,500

Failure to properly position crossover switches $7,500

Failure to properly use derails $7,500
