Well after looking at the pics on chris' page, I think NS lengthened the frame .... everything behind the cab has gotten longer!!! And there's a gap between the front truck and tank. Unless I find a frame stretcher it may not happen !
They didn't lengthen the frame. The new "admiral" cab/low short hood were installed forward from their original location due to a larger electrical cabinet. The length of the low short hood was shortened to make up the difference.
As to the gap between front truck and fuel tank, the former demo units were built with 3,100 gallon fuel tanks, as compared to the 3,500 gallon tanks on the NS production units.
Chris
Thanks Chris I just spent the last hour racking my brain and I got it all measured .... 5 cups of coffee free ...2 Advil 2.39 getting the GP59E Drawn up on easter while the family argues about tater salad priceless. ! Happy easter all
I thought only we argued of tatar salad. Thats funny. Happy Easter.
Lol thanks bears! Well here's all I can do till I can see the other side ! This thing is driving me insane so I need the break!
Looking good! Dan
Thanks!
When it drives you nuts, just do what I do. Put it back on the shelf and get out one of the 15 other projects.....

That is just diesel projects
Got plenty of steamer on the project pile too!
Not to mention the freight cars, passenger cars, etc, etc.....
Took some time today and worked the other side assumed as much as possible
Badhorse:
Are you going to correct the size of the engine compartment?
Chris
I might as well ! I have to replace the whole back pilot as this loco to a dive off the layout! The good thing is its a GP50 so shouldn't be to bad !
Worked a lil on the dynamic Break section ! Now its to the doors!
Nice! Just a question for you or Chris... what changes to the engine compartment were made when they are rebuilt? Dan
No changes to the engine compartment when rebuilt. However, the GP59 has a 12-cylinder engine, so the engine compartment is shorter by two doors per side compared to the GP60 or GP50, which is what he is using as the basis for his model.
Chris
Thanks for the info Chris! Dan
Thanks Chris ! I found a few drawings , and got measurements so ill start the dremel tool up and get started
Another question for y'all... is the GP59/GP59E's shorter(frame wise) from the GP50/60's? I would assume so, for the lack of the two engine compartment doors... but, not sure. Dan
No they are the same as the GP60. Just minus the two engine doors, difference is in the space between the cab and the clean air room(inertial filter). Basically everything moved back and filler added behind the cab.
In pictures look at the space between the back of the cab and the line that runs from the roof to the walkway in front of the blower duct.

That's the area that's been bugging me jwall! I hear they scooted the nose up and its throwing me off because the gap was already there!??? But I think them adding the newer filter hatch fan thing it fills the area that the regular 59s had!? The measurements and my guesstaments seem to be matching up!
Okay... I think I have got it... There is a "filler" space (for lack of better terms) in the GP59 that is taken out for the two extra doors on the 50/60's... but, when NS rebuilds the 59's into 59E's... a bigger electrical cabinet takes up that space and then some... hence the cab being moved forward. Am I even close? LOL! Dan
Nail on the head
Cool! Guess the blind squirrel CAN find a nut! LOL! Dan
Cabs done and can be removed a few more sanding and filling spots ! The rest is waiting on parts, miss the day when I could just head to the hobby shop and get what I need instead of waiting 5-6 days and $5-$10 shipping could be gas money!!!
New filter hatch fan thing is on
BH, I attached a pic of an old EMD cab. The side windows are larger and go down a little further than the ADM cab. Also, the cab roof is a more sharp angle. The numbers are centered (not up some). This seems to give the impression that the ADM cab is bigger... but, I think it's an illusion. Also, the ADM cab slightly goes down further onto the frame (maybe an inch or two) to me. I was using the photo you linked me to compare. Take a look yourself and tell me what you think. Dan
I think your right dan the drawing has the cab at 87.75 inches long but 81 inches tall just a smidge bigger than the regular cabs! So back to the drawing board. Thanks for the help! It got all kinds a crazy for me after the real drawings dropped ! I should leave this stuff to the professionals
The doors on the boxes are taller don't know why! And I never noticed the original cabs over hung the longer battery box? So that confused me to I suppose (thinking the cab was longer)
Good deal! And nothing wrong with going back to the drawing board... now, that I am on some downtime... I am going to redo some of one of my industries... will post a thread about it soon. Dan

It might have something to do with under floor A/C. Dan
trudging along on the 59 E added steps and the traction motor cable thing and the rear pilot after its dive bomb mission !!! I decided to keep the cab since its only off by a matter of inches tons left to do ..... TONS
Nice BH! I have an old Athearn U33B and a Railpower C30-7 shell... someday I plan on taking them and making a B30-7(even have a set of FB-2 athearn sideframes)... someday... Dan
Does CSX still have 30-7s ? I seen a pic of 5539 yellow nose and stealth body thought that was cool
Now... no, at least not active. But, in 2005 (my layout time era) they still had a couple B30-7, B36-7, and B36-7 that were turned into Remote Control Platforms. I was thinking of making it an ex-SP bloody nose unit that has been bought by a lease company. That way when teh NYC S12 is down for repairs... I could use the B30-7 to switch B&B Industries. Dan
That's a good ideer ! Forgot the gevos took their numbers
starting to look like a loco ... to bad it aint a 59E !!! :-\

?- I thought it was a GP59E? Dan
I feel like i should of built a GP59 first then tried the "E" plus the lack of info , dimensions , and pics (until lately)! I was to quick at the draw but with an unloaded gun !!! Still ain't giving up though I still have a lot of things to go hopefully it'll all pan out
I feel that way sometimes too... however, once a coat of paint gets applied and things start coming together... my mind usually changes. Dan
Now that I can read a ruler..... I'll be AOK
Finally !!! I have a system that works ... Sits square and fits to a tee now the get the rest built and move on
The other side
Looks good! Where did you get the engine doors/battery box doors? Dan
Those are cannons I cut n trimmed em ! Dunno why I never thought to do that before !!!
Considering you just learned how to use a ruler... LOL! Dan
OHHHH OUCH lol !!!
Badhorse, even if your measurements were slightly off, it's still a million times better than anything I can do. If I was scratch building from styrene, I'm pretty sure you wouldnt be able to tell it was supposed to resemble a cab!!!
Thanks LP ! I'm sure if ya put your heart in to it you'd be surprised , and a poop load of patiences ! Seeing some of the stuff you've done , you'd be alright !!!!
Getting there a few more things and its on to the paint booth
One more
Cannot wait to see it painted. I will be getting around to that B30-7/B36-7 kitbash soon... so , I will be buggin' ya for advice! :D DE Dan.
Yeah this is slowly rolling along :P ! Gotta add the break wheel housing , pilot detail , gotta find hand rails , and that should be it ! I've always been a sucker for lil B unit GEs...anytime I can help just let me know
I have a set of Athearn handrails for a BB GP50. I bought the shell for the cab and some misc stuff. If you want them... let me know. DE Dan
Sure " Ill take em " I tried smokey valley but Walthers is the only place ya can order them from 18 for the parts 10 for shipping .... Nah
