Saw an Intermodal train and it had mostly containers( I understand the trend towards these and away from normal trailers) and it had a few containers on chassis on flatcars. Why would they do this? Wouldn't it just be easier to take the container off the chassis and just put it in a well car? Thanks for info.

Now as a retired Conductor I'm going to guess what happened. Simply made the line up that way. They add flat cars and what are together. Then the blocks are made up. Say Atlanta and Jacksonville. If the car fits it goes if not they might have a empty car which seems to happen a lot when they need cars in a different city or yard. If they need chassis that falls in the same direction. Why unload the container when they will just have to load it back when time comes to unload?
