Yesterday evening (Friday 06/28/13) I got word through several sources that a Eastbound 792 coal train was out and running from Louisville, with the "Birthday Ace" NS 1030 leading, and Conrail 8098 as DPU on the bottom.. The train made excellent time getting over the road, and Carmon and I got out and enjoyed a beautiful evening to get a few shots.

As soon as Carmon got home from work, we headed West and beat the train to Waddy Ky by MAYBE a minute...90 seconds at most. From there, we followed them on East towards Danville. The low evening sun soon started to give way to the gathering storm clouds, but with a little creative composing I was able to get some decent stuff. We ended the day by watching a awesome sunset on the way home, and stopped to grab one last shot (and my favorite of the day) as the storm clouds and rain  mixed with the setting sun..

With the Conrail and Wabash both in the Indiana coal pool for now, we should have a lot more chances to shoot them, but I seem to have had more luck with the 8098 in the past week..I am just about "Conrailed" out :)

The whole set can be seen at this link, with the rest of my 2013 Heritage images. >>>>>> http://www.pbase.com/kd4jsl/nsheritage_2013_eb

NS 1030 brings 797 by the Waddy Ky firehouse.

Conrail 8098 brings up the rear, working as the DPU. It is seen here wrapping around Turtle Tree curve, and then at the East end of the siding at Waddy.

Head and rear shots of the train at Vanarsdale Ky

The 8098 brings up the rear as the train drapes over the big hill at Bohon Ky, slowing to start the run through the streets of Harrodsburg.

And my last frame of the day...On the way home, I spied this scene near Talmage Ky, and had to make a quick U-turn and try to capture it. The sun almost gone, lighting up the storm clouds and rain...a great way to end the day!

Beautiful pics. That barn scene  is a long ago memory of my what I would see at my Papaws farm.

Beautiful shots! The barn scene looks like it could be up here in eastern PA.

I could picture that barn scene in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY, too. I guess it's pretty universal for railfans... and that's a good thing.   8)
Got questions? I can help you with the Erie Lackawanna (including predecessors), Lehigh Valley, Delaware & Hudson and the shortlines of upstate NY.

Thanks for the comments guys.  I know about all I ever share here is train pics, but I do shoot a lot more stuff than just that. I find it hard to waste a good scene when I have the camera out!

The folks I am friends with on Facebook see this stuff all the time, but if your not on there and  want to see more than trains, try these links..
