Title: Wet day on Saluda Mountain
Post by: E.M. Bell on November 16, 2005, 07:20:53 PM
As I weed through  CD's where I have a lot of my archived shots on looking for material for our new website, I keep coming across stuff that really takes me down memory lane.

Below is one of those. A NS local (sporting a trio of SD40-2's) tip-toes down a soggy Saluda Mountain, at Melrose NC back in 1991. I made several trips to that area just to shoot the Mountain, shot the 611 both times it tackeled the hill, camped out  in the back of the truck at Melrose and hiked for miles,  all to shoot the famous grade. I dont recall the weather ever being good for most of those trips (except the steam stuff), so this shot is pretty much what I remember..a cold wet day in the mountains and old EMD's doing what they do best. You can almost hear the whine of dynamics as they struggle to hold back this otherwise meager train.

Is there any hope that Saluda will ever be active again?
