Nemo Tunnel Scene In HO Scale
« on: May 22, 2017, 06:30:29 AM »
I've posted photos of my CNO&TP-based layout on this forum over the years, but it's time for a major update (in narrative and photographs).  I've now completed my Ohio (Cincinnati) and Kentucky sections, so recent work has been in the Tennessee area.  The first 3 images are "historic" in nature, so you see how things started in the area that has become the Nemo Tunnel section of the layout.

1st pic: 5-6 years ago, I created benchwork where the mainline would come out of a tunnel, immediately cross a gorge, and continue southbound (the notch in the support beam under the shelf at right will allow autorack cars and double stack units to roll easily in the final tunnel section)
2nd image: This photograph shows the forming in the Nemo Tunnel basin, for the Emory River that will be below
3rd pic: For most of the last 3-4 years, this section of the layout remained covered in white plaster . . . with a scene very similar to the B&W cover photo of TIES magazine, the November 1963 issue! http://southern.railfan.net/ties/1963/63-11/cover.jpg

Note: Thanks to Tom Daspit for digitizing the covers of previous TIES magazines; I kept a print-out of the Nov. '63 cover near my plastered-over area for several years.

I am very appreciative to everyone who have placed detailed photo's and video's on the Internet over the years . . . . the images have helped.
Examples:  http://www.railpictures.net/photo/213892/  OR  http://www.pbase.com/kd4jsl/image/162817123  (by EM Bell)

Below are two examples of using those resources, the 1st image shows the pics used to create the tunnel face (yes, it is accurate to HO scale)
2nd image: The piece of 1/4" thick plastic looks pretty realistic with some weathering

Nemo Tunnel Update #3

Forward to the last 12-15 months, and you can see how the vista has evolved.  Note: Again, I was working on the Ohio and Kentucky regions of the layout prior to getting to this section.

1st pic: Even before I weathered the tunnel entrance, the tunnel and bridge parts were dry-fit in place (with the Southern heritage unit sitting in place for show)
2nd image: The basic scenery is shown being installed . . . . the folks at Woodland Scenics and Scenic Express love me!
3 pic: This will become the classic viewing angle when the entire area is done (the water is now added, but note the challenge of hiding the tracks behind the scene)

Nemo Tunnel Update #4
These past 2 weeks have been "fun" as everything has come together.  School was out in early May, so I've had plenty of time to install tree after tree after tree. I have yet to tackle the area on the south side of the bridge, or the "Rathole" mainline as it continues south through central Tennessee.  But I'm pleased with the effort.

1st image: The basic scene as you walk into the TN section of my CNO&TP layout
2nd photo: This should look familiar, per the linked URLs above (notice that the south bank isn't done yet . . . . and this image also shows me that I'll not have tall trees on this section of the layout, as this is a prime photo vista)

OK, due to sizing issues on this forum, I have to place this final photograph all be itself.

But that gives me the opportunity to point out the Reading heritage unit running #2 on this intermodal train, going southbound on the CNO&TP line near Wartburg, TN.  And I will also point out that the scene looks like the "real thing" in this photo: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=123512

Or, here is a drone view of the remote area: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oET6QWwNI8M

Enjoy all the pics!
