Two weekends in western NY
« on: March 01, 2017, 08:00:03 PM »
I spent some time with the western section of the Southern Tier Mainline twice last month. The first weekend was sunny and warm.

NS local H45 heading west at MP 387/Molasses Hill Road in Linden, with an SD40-2 and GP38-2 for power:

NS 287 westbound at MP 389/Spring Road in Alexander:

NS 309 heading west at MP 385.6/Silver Road in Bethany, with colorful foreign power:

NS 28N passing the Linden Mill while heading eastbound at MP 385/Linden Road in Bethany:

Slide show of all 4 trains, including the going away shots:

All photos in this post and the link were taken by me Saturday 2/18/2017 in western NY.

Got questions? I can help you with the Erie Lackawanna (including predecessors), Lehigh Valley, Delaware & Hudson and the shortlines of upstate NY.

The following weekend was wet and cooler.

NS 28N heading east at State Route 238 in Attica:

NS 36T sitting at CP Linden (in Linden, of course):

NS 309 at Molasses Hill Road in Linden:

NS 309 and 36T meet at CP Linden:

NS 287 heading west at MP 380/Dale ROad in Dale, with a leased unit leading:

After the two westbound trains passed, NS 36T resumed its eastward journey. This location is just a few hundred feet east of MP 380 in Dale:

All photos in this post and the link were taken by me Saturday 2/25/2017 in western NY. Although the weather wasn't as nice as a week earlier, catching three of the four trains in a relatively short stretch of time was good compensation.

Update: the leased unit #7333 on NS 28N was recently purchased by NS from Citirail.
