Christmas Vacation 2016
« on: January 07, 2017, 10:18:32 AM »
I had a fun Christmas last month. Besides the customary good visit with family, y'all can guess where I spent the rest of my time.

Norfolk Southern's service bulletin had led me (and other railfans in the area) to believe there would be no trains the day after Christmas. Wrong! At least 3 eastbounds ran on the Southern Tier Mainline that day, and I caught two of them.

NS 28N at Lowman Crossing Road in Wellsburg:

NS 206 at the Route 282 overpass in Tioga, NY:

A slide show of both trains:

Got questions? I can help you with the Erie Lackawanna (including predecessors), Lehigh Valley, Delaware & Hudson and the shortlines of upstate NY.

The following day began with the Bath & Hammondsport RR interchanging with Norfolk Southern's local H85. A nice coincidence, my friend Fred Albrecht (who also works for the LA&L) was the engineer on the B&H!

The B&H Alcos wait at the dike for NS to make the drop-off in Painted Post:

NS local H85 at the Steuben Street crossing in Painted Post, with tank cars ofr the B&H:

With the drop-off completed, the NS EMDs head back to the wye, running east next to Chemung Street in Painted Post:

I also chased the B&H west to Eagle Valley Road in Blessing, where they service a gas dealer:

A slide show of NS H85 and the B&H, with lots more photos:

I then headed east to Sayre, PA -where local H12 was preparing to dspart after working the yard:

However, H12 had to wait for NS 23K (with a nice BNSF leader) to clear the interlocking in Waverly, NY:

After 23K passed, NS H12 pulled onto the Southern Tier mainline at Waverly:

NS local H10 worked the Anchor Glass plant in Elmira shortly before sunset:

A slide show of the complete action from NS H12, 23K and H10:
