Roanoke Yard
« on: August 01, 2016, 06:43:20 AM »
Went up to Roanoke a few days ago and spent two days. Anyone thinking of this trip let me just say its worth it. My next on bucket list is Horseshoe Curve. There was hundreds of engines in storage in Roanoke. Are these there waiting to be deleted or due to the slow down of coal?

Some will eventually be scrapped, some are there and will be sold for auction on August 18th, and others will eventually be put back into service as traffic levels pick back up.

You will love Horseshoe Curve. Nothing  like it in the world.  Be sure to go a little further West to Gallitzin and Cresson and catch some of the action coming up the West slope.

Next time you're in the area, make sure to trek up the hill towards Christiansburg. A normal weekday gets about 30 trains of all manner going through, and they have to fight the grade pretty hard. Plus, there's the Montgomery Tunnel, downtown Christiansburg, and Vicker, all worth a visit. :)
