Windows updates for 7 and 8.1
« on: November 12, 2014, 10:59:53 PM »
If you have automatic updates turned on and you're running Windows 7 or 8.1, MS updated your PC on the 12th.  One of the updates affected ATCS Monitor.  If you know updates were applied and you see a train doing a double cross over near Georgetown and other strange things, the problem is caused by a security update.  There are many messages about this problem in the Yahoo ATCS Group.  One user uninstalled a group of the updates and that fixed the errors.

I uninstalled one of the updates in his group, KB3006226, and my ATCS Monitor is now functioning properly.  To uninstall KB3006226, click on Start (Win 7) or the MS icon in the left bottom corner of the desktop pane of 8.1, and start the Control Panel.  Click on Programs, then Programs and Features (Uninstall or Change a Program).  In the column on the top left you'll see View Installed Updates.  Click on that and wait for your PC to populate the update list.  Scroll down toward the bottom under Microsoft Windows, look for ones dated when your last updates were applied, and highlight KB3006226.  Then click uninstall at the top.  Your PC will have to be restarted for the uninstall to be completed.

This problem may be on other versions of Windows after XP, which have been updated.  I hope this one uninstall works for you.

When I wrote the original message, I had uninstalled KB3006226 on my Win 7 PC.  I have now uninstalled it under Win 8.1 and that fixed the problem on it.
One other way to know your ATCS is not functioning properly is to click on a station name and you'll get an error message that when you close the error window ATCS will crash.

Thank you! I uninstalled the KB3006226 on Win 8.1 and everything works. Glad we've got somebody with this kind of knowledge around.

After you uninstall the KB3006226 update file - run Windows Update again. KB3006226 will show up as an "Important Update" again and will reinstall it unless you hide the update. To hide it from future updates, select the file and right click on it and choose Hide.

Microsoft has released a hotfix for the problem that update KB3006226 causes with ATCS monitor.
Link to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3020338
and pick the correct download for your operating system version, e.g. Win 7, Win 8.1, etc.
The update of KB3006226 must be installed prior to installing KB3020338.
Microsoft emailed me a link to the hotfix.  After downloading the .zip file and unzipping it, the installation of KB3020338 and the restart of my PC has now fixed the ATCS error that was present whenever KB3006226 is installed.

Three cheers for the hotfix!
