April 2014 Contest "Steam"
« on: April 06, 2014, 02:07:07 PM »
With the start of the Spring "21st Century Steam" schedule already underway for the year, the theme for the April contest will be STEAM!

Show us your best Two Steam shots of the Southern or NS Steam program. Images MUST be taken by you, and must feature a engine used by the Southern or NS during either era of the excursion program. You may enter up to Two images, and standard contest rules apply.

Entries will be taken up till 10pm on Friday, April 25th.

Here is my only two encounters with steam so far. I hope I managed to capture the "WOW" factor

Southern 630 running on the Belt line through Chattanooga after returning from Attalla at Dusk.

765 powers up the grade at Climber Indiana as it heads West towards Lafayette Indiana.

My two from last spring's trips:

Photo 1: SOU 630 sprints beside Highway 11 near Collinsville on the March 2nd, 2013 Chattanooga to Attalla round trip.

Photo 2: A man and young boy pose in front of SOU 630 following the final Spencer to Barber Junction round trips in April 2013. To me this captures what the steam program is all about: timeless memories with those from every generation.

This may be the best contest ever!

Here are my two entries; first is 630 coming through Jarrett's Tunnel in the NC Loops.   The second is the NKP 765 leading the NS Pokey excursion going through the KY Hatfield Tunnels.

In the early 1990s I made photos of an excursion train that stopped at Princeton, KY.  Nickel Plate 765 was pulling it.  Looking through these photos in the contest, I found one photo of 765.  I got out my pictures of that excursion train to see what I had.  There it was--#765.  I didn't know anything about the Nickel Plate RR back then.  I just went to make photos of a train with a steam engine that stopped for a photo op for visitors.  Photo made with a 35mm SLR, color negative film.  I scanned the film. Adjusted the tones to where it looks pretty good on my computer.   [It showed up darker on jreb.]

I am going to attach this photo here, instead of using Photobucket.  Using my old computer. Can't get into Photobucket.

Mr. Forum Admin for the photo contest:

No image to contribute; just a comment.  I sure hope you give us plenty of votes this month!

So far, the pics are outstanding . . . and it's going to be hard to narrow down the "best" images to only one or two scenes.

Last month you had to run a tie-breaker round for the top photo, and this month I could see 4-5 images getting significant votes.  What a great group of entries so far!

I agree...great images! I'd much rather see the work of others than post my images...so I'll just take the Jimmy Swaggart route: "....I just want to watch..."

Here's my pair of deuces, don't know how they'll fare against some of the rest, good topic this year!  Both photos are from the 2012 Railfest at TVRM.

1) With the second ever public mainline steam excursion of the new NS steam program, 630 wastes no time getting up to track speed!

2) 630 shoves out on to the NS main with a trainload full of happy passengers!
