General Discussion / Train wreck in PA
Last post by Bill Richardson - November 11, 2019, 09:17:34 AM
How did that train wreck in PA happen?  I read an article about it that said the PTC could not prevent this.  Seems like the train crew could have prevented it.  Could they not see that other train parked up ahead?  That article said the moving train was on an ascending hill, and the parked train was on a descending hill; same hill, different sides.  I guess the parked train was not in view of the moving train crew--over the hill.  Maybe the crew was just not paying attention--reading, texting, talking, doing something else at the time.  Speed was below 35, according to that article; in a restricted speed zone.  A couple, or a few years ago, there was a train wreck, or a train hit a vehicle,  in which one of the train crew was texting at the time.  I think that is how it was.  I haven't read much about this incident.  Sure was a mess.  Seems that hill was the problem, with a parked train on the other side.

Not much on here any more, but I thought I'd do a little rambling in case it might be of interest.  I don't get many train engine photos these days.  There isn't much of interest to me to aim a camera at.  About all I ever see now are the usual black engines.  In the last few years, up until the last year or so, I used to see other road names, leased engines and/or borrowed (?), and some older black engines of NS.  Seems like about all the older engines have been converted with wide cabs.  I used to see some GP engines sort of frequently, mainly at the Danville, KY yard, either passing through in a train, or parked in the yard.  I made photos of all those I saw.  I'd see one or more at Burnside, KY too, now and then.  I hear trains every day, since I live near the CNO&TP, and now and then I get near the tracks somewhere, mainly  at the Danville yard.  I don't wait long any more, just go to see if anything interesting happens to be there, for a short while.  Now and then I look on Heritag.com and see that something unusual had passed through, but I was not there to "catch" it.  I looked on that website a couple nights ago and saw four BNSF "Warbonnet" engines that had been sighted, in other places, and one "Bluebonnet".  Seems that BNSF is using more of those former Santa Fe engines lately, or maybe it is normal and I just don't know about it.  I have seen one only three times in the last few years, and got photos.  Nice to see those.  I think one of those in that list passed through here.  I need a crystal ball so I can see what is coming.

Back in the summer I was at the Danville yard and met two guys from Germany, who were here on vacation, on a train photo trip.  They were headed to Chattanooga.  Just recently, I went to Kings Mountain, and met two guys from Toronto, Canada.  There are retired railroad guys, who were on a train photo trip, heading toward Chattanooga.  I guess there could be a lot of that, train photo trips.   I'd like to go to a place where there are several big steam engines, and others.  I mean big engines.  The monsters.  That would be interesting.  A place with a lot to see would be nice, even old diesels.

I recently acquired a DSLR, a Canon 5D, with a Canon 24-85mm lens.  My first DSLR.  I've made only a few train photos with it, nothing special.  Here is a cropped photo I made recently, near the Waynesburg crossing.

I cut out all but the lead engine.  In a recent post, I said I could no longer embed a photo on here, from Flickr.  Somehow, I had missed the BB Code, or didn't use it right, but got that issue solved.

I'm going to try selling prints on Etsy.  My shop name now is "BillsPhotoPrints".  I make a lot of outdoor/nature photos, and will start with a dozen of those, in 8x10 size.  If that does any good, I'll probably add a few railroad photos.

Well, lunch is ready.  Gotta go.  Maybe more later.

The Nags Head Lounge / Steam engine at Paducah, KY---...
Last post by Bill Richardson - November 05, 2019, 10:21:28 AM
This isn't about Norfolk Southern, but trains are trains, and nothing else is happening on here.  I wonder how many people out there not very far from Paducah know about IC-1518, an old steam engine parked by the floodwall.  People anywhere near Paducah probably have seen it, but there could be many railroad fans nowhere close to Paducah, yet not very far, who have not.  This engine was parked at a little park near the river back in the 1980s.  It sat there for years and the outside appearance gradually deteriorated.  Then it was moved by truck and trailer to a place by the floodwall, and then repainted.  As far as I know, it is still there, although the paint has faded again to some extent.  I haven't seen it in a few years.  Attached is a 2014 photo.

I remember seeing one of these in operation, crossing a street in Paducah.  I probably saw them in operation at other times, but I vaguely remember that one particular time.  Traffic had to stop and wait while some rail cars were being moved to some business place.  One time when I was real young, I was taken inside the roundhouse that was at the Paducah Shops.  It had several steam engines inside.  I didn't take a camera; didn't even think about a camera.  That was regrettable.  I regret not using a camera later on, after I was an adult, to make photos of trains.  I could have had plenty of good ones, including photos of the IC passenger trains.  There is a big trestle in the Barlow Bottoms, and I saw passenger trains climbing that trestle to go over the river.  Too bad I didn't have a camera with me.  Anyway, here is a little about IC-1518.  Someday I'd like to go to a place that has several big steam engines.

Thanks for the update . . . . . I am the one who posed the original question a few years back and am glad to hear about "possible" virtual routes along that famous line.

With the advent of ORTS and a new editor for MSTS, I have continued to use it, simply because it has the best physics of any of the simulators.  Currently I have the Clinch and Appalachia areas under construction, and if anyone has created modern coal handling equipment for MSTS it would be nice.  The route begins in Bluefield and follow the Clinch Valley line and its branches to Norton, thence the former L&N and IRR lines to Appalachia and then the St.  Charles line.  You have to stop somewhere, so it just sorta goes out in oblivion west of Appalachia except for the St. Charles line.

I also have a preliminary setup of the CNO&TP, 2nd district, but I have not started track laying etc.  The 3rd district is in the www.train-sim.com library already and while not up to my standard, I did clean it up for a friend.  In doing the 2nd district, my intent is to include both the pre-1963 routes and the current route.
