Vintage Rails / Re: Abandoned Rathole Tunnels

Additionally, we looked for an easy way down to No. 5 under US 27. I have one photo from it years ago but can't remember how I actually got down to it. There is a driveway located at https://maps.app.goo.gl/Pn7rLKfR8Yd1kMv17 that appeared to have been a trailhead at one point, with a mailbox that reads "Trailhead," yet there are a plethora of signs, cameras, and LED lights at the entrance. I think this is where I parked before and walked up the old right-of-way, but it looks like a landowner isn't too keen on this now. This would make for a fantastic trailhead parking area for multiple tunnels.

I recently visited Tunnel Nos. 3 and 4 at Burnside and Nos. 7 and 8 near Greenwood.

I've posted more photos and narrative at https://abandonedonline.net/a-winter-exploration-of-four-cincinnati-southern-railway-tunnels/, with the full gallery at https://abandonedonline.net/location/cincinnati-southern-railway/

NS' Investor Day Webcast is available for viewing and sheds light on the company's plans for 2023 and beyond.

The need to maintain adequate staffing levels and focus on metrics besides operating ratio is a theme throughout.

General Discussion / Re: Final Graniteville NTSB Re...

The original link that Peachfuzz shared is no longer active, so here is an updated link to the NTSB report:
https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/AccidentReports/Reports/RAR0504.pdf

The University of South Carolina film and video archive recently posted a video of one of Chris Seeling's first training runs over the line between Augusta and Columbia. The video was recorded in December 2000 aboard Train 192. At the 34 minute mark, the switch to Avondale Mills at Graniteville comes into view as the train passes over it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZlvgmqHlrQ

For those not familiar, Chris Seeling was the engineer on the ill-fated 192 involved in the Granitville crash in 2005. The video is very unique in its own right as recordings from the cab were not as common during the pre-digital era. In addition, the coincidental nature of the details is significant enough to evoke emotion and require reverence.

While the original poster (Peachfuzz/Gary Larimer) has since passed away--and many of the once active JREB members have moved onto other platforms or interests,  I wanted to share this video here for posterity.

Virtual Railroading / Re: Virtual CNO&TP

I have continued to create new routes for MSTS/ORTS.  At the moment, the most recent is the 3rd district of the CNO&TP.  An earlier version was cleaned up by me, but this new release from early 2022 is entirely revampted although I used the "framework"  of the old route.

At the request of an L&N "simmer" I created the Corbin to Knoxville line and included a short portion of the SR line to Jellico.  Now I am working on a revision & increase of that route which will include the L&N from Corbin to Etowah, also the Southern from Knoxville through Clinton to Harriman Jct. with a short portion of the CNO&TP 3rd district, and Clinto to Jellico to Fonde, KY &  Arco.  Also the Cumberland Gap line.  Knoxville to Arco was the route of a unit coal train from 11/67 till sometime in the 1980s.  I was supervisor of the track geometry car (R-1) on the first train to  ARCO in Nov. 1967 after which the line was regularly tested.  Look for this one late in 2022.  My PC is beginning to tell me that it wants to quit and when it does, the issue will be getting any simulation program to run under Win-11 as any new off-the shelf PC will be preloaded with that.

Great job, as always, keeping up with all of the changes related to the roll out of TOP SPG.  I really appreciate it.  One update I have is that D79 is still being used as a grain shuttle symbol for trains operating to/from Curran, IL and Griggsville, IL on the Springfield-Hannibal District.

One question:  Would you happen to have kept copies of your old train symbol lists over the years?  I'm working on a Decatur, IL-Moberly, MO Train Dispatcher simulation for 2008 and I'm having a hard time remembering all of the trains that ran on the Brooklyn and St. Louis Districts.  Even a list from the 2010-2012 time period would be helpful.  The old lists would also be interesting to compare against the current list.

This has been an awesome resource over the years! Thanks to Andrew and the JREB team for having this information online!

Will there be an update with the recent and upcoming symbol changes/additions as NS is implementing a number of changes with TOP-SPG?

I update this list on a daily basis.

Not that I am aware of typically rock is mined locally and hauled via truck short distances, so I suspect there isn't much use for rail access for rock quarries. Theoretically the limestone quarry in Lexington was close enough to the LL Branch to have had a connection though none was ever made to my knowledge.
