Train wreck in PA
« on: November 11, 2019, 09:17:34 AM »
How did that train wreck in PA happen?  I read an article about it that said the PTC could not prevent this.  Seems like the train crew could have prevented it.  Could they not see that other train parked up ahead?  That article said the moving train was on an ascending hill, and the parked train was on a descending hill; same hill, different sides.  I guess the parked train was not in view of the moving train crew--over the hill.  Maybe the crew was just not paying attention--reading, texting, talking, doing something else at the time.  Speed was below 35, according to that article; in a restricted speed zone.  A couple, or a few years ago, there was a train wreck, or a train hit a vehicle,  in which one of the train crew was texting at the time.  I think that is how it was.  I haven't read much about this incident.  Sure was a mess.  Seems that hill was the problem, with a parked train on the other side.
